CHAPTER SIX

KATHERINE’S eyes took another swift trip around the hospital chapel, almost as if she was looking for an escape route.

It was a plain and simple room with pale painted walls and pale honey-coloured wooden pews to complement the single arched, stained-glass window behind the unadorned altar.

Usually the atmosphere in here was peaceful, somewhere where tormented patients, family or friends could come to pray or just to seek solitude for a little while.

Today, much to her amazement, it was full.

Behind her she could hear the rustles and murmurs of dozens of members of staff, some dressed in their finery while others, still in uniform, had obviously snatched time away from their shifts to be with them.

‘Do you, Katherine Gillard, take Damon Cade…?’

The time-honoured words had been flowing around her like some strange mist, cutting her off from her surroundings until that moment.

Her hands tightened reflexively over the stem of the single perfect blood-red rose Damon had handed her when she’d joined him at the front of the chapel.

She’d barely glanced in his direction, so wrapped up had she been in the thoughts inside her head. Suddenly she turned and looked straight at him.

For a moment she was disappointed to see that he was wearing a dark suit, half wishing that he’d chosen to wear the collar-less shirt and leather jacket he’d worn when they’d taken her family out for a meal. Somehow it had hinted at a less obviously professional—a slightly wilder—side to his nature.

As if he’d been waiting for her to look at him he met her gaze, and in that moment everything became crystal clear.

She loved Damon Cade.

She’d loved him for the past two years—therefore any promises she made today were nothing more than the plain, honest truth.

‘I do,’ she said softly but clearly, knowing that if he cared to look he would see the truth of it in her eyes.

With the heavy weight of guilt removed her heart felt light enough to float, and she didn’t even try to stop the happy smile that crept over her face as the ceremony drew to a close.

‘You may kiss your bride,’ said the chaplain with a beaming smile of his own. Poor man, Katherine thought fleetingly. He probably didn’t have many opportunities for conducting the happier services of his profession.

Then Damon took her in his arms and tilted his head towards hers and she stopped thinking altogether.

It had been nearly a week since the two of them had managed to snatch any time together and she’d been wondering frantically whether she’d imagined the electricity between them.

The first contact between their lips told her that her imagination hadn’t done the sensation justice. This was nuclear meltdown, and as she dissolved against him she had no idea whether it had affected her brain or her knees first.

All she knew was that this was worth every minute of the worry she’d gone through over the last eleven days since she’d decided on her mad leap year’s proposal.

‘That’s enough,’ Katherine heard her grandmother
